I (Ralf) was a bit cheeky at a market and offered to fix the braided strip. However, there is no guarantee that it will be able to withstand the strain when you actually sit down on the chair later and the customer has agreed to this. The work I, Ralf, have put on myself will cause me to keep my mouth shut about it in the future. Even though I enjoy working with wood and have done it that way from time to time.
With the braid in the frame, the braided strip still looks somewhat repairable. But as is so often the case, things can only get worse.
And things got worse. When the old braid was completely removed, you could see that the braid strip was torn along its entire length. So get to work and try what’s possible.
Since the torn part of the braided strip could still be easily pressed back into its original position, I used plenty of modern wood glue to put the braided strip back together. Yes, I know…actually I don’t like modern glue and prefer traditional and reversible glue.
Ultimately, however, strength is needed at this point because of the high tensile load on the braid. But glue alone is not enough.
After the glue had completely dried from the first step, it was now time to drill 6mm holes through the braided strip in the frame. It’s stupid if the drill or cordless screwdriver is too big to drill from the inside of the frame to the outside. And the small cordless screwdriver is now reaching its limits, as the battery runs out more and more quickly due to age. So millimeter by millimeter without much pressure and after days finally the preliminary end result. Drilling, loading, drilling, loading, etc. This takes until all the wooden dowels are in place.
The second part of my woodworm work involves removing all protruding and oozing wood glue from the drill holes, staining the wooden dowels for their appearance and breaking sharp edges.
