Yesterday’s market day in Bad Salzhausen was quite pleasant. Both the daytime temperature and the number of visitors were right. And above all, our breakfast was secured again by the butcher Meige. Coarse and fresh bratwurst from the grill. After construction, a strengthening that has been a tradition for years.
None of this has anything to do with the title. But during the course of the day an older gentleman came to the stand, looked at the baskets, reached into them and was immediately told that the inner sections were too long and needed to be shortened. Katja and I just looked at each other puzzled and before either of us could answer we received the explanation. The poor old man had bought a basket from whomever and actually injured his hand while reaching into it. And that would violate safety regulations.
The way he told the story, people immediately thought of an emergency doctor and emergency surgery. He would then have returned the basket to the seller and warned about the risk of serious injury. Apparently the seller then put plastic wrap on the inside. That’s how it has to be… because of the risk of injury.
The nice thing was when he then asked us whether he had perhaps just been acting stupidly. We refrained from giving an honest answer and let the man go on his way.
So people please pay attention if you have a basket from me or are planning to buy one. These are all potential death traps and you can seriously injure yourself with them. You can also burn your mouth with hot coffee or cut your finger with a knife while peeling potatoes.
I’m so glad that Katja always checks her baskets with her own hand, both inside and out, after they’re finished to see if there’s a piece of willow sticking out somewhere or if there’s a sharp edge that could possibly scratch the skin on your fingers. And just as glad that the man didn’t want to buy a basket with this story. Because then (pun intended) I would have turned him down.
