The guild and crafts market in Seligenstadt, organized by the Klatschmohn Seligenstadt e.V. association, could finally take place again. This market only takes place every 2 years on the grounds and in the museum of the former Benedictine abbey in Seligenstadt. Due to Corona, the market had to be postponed again and again. Centuries-old crafts are the focus of this event.
After 4 years it finally happened again last weekend. At around 100 stands in the open-air area and in the museum, the almost 10,000 visitors last weekend certainly couldn’t complain about being bored or not having enough action.
Since 2012, I have been able to take part in this legendary market every two years and always show my basket-making craft in the museum. It doesn’t just consist of making baskets, as many visitors were surprised to find out. At least not if you have learned the craft in a three-year apprenticeship. At the beginning of the 1980s, my training included fine weaving, chair weaving, beaten work (i.e. weaving with willow) and also cane furniture construction.
Today, of course, the range of training looks a little different and more modern. However, the basic training is still three years at the only vocational school for wickerwork designers in Lichtenfels/Upper Franconia.
Exhibiting and demonstrating in a museum has several advantages. Cool, dry and closed after the market ends. Unfortunately, it also has a small disadvantage. Despite the signs, many visitors cannot find their way into the museum or stop in the middle because the path along the exhibitors is apparently a dead end and they turn around again after the last room. We repeatedly told visitors that there was more crafts “around the corner” and down a few steps. The signage in the museum could perhaps be done better here, because when you look around the corner you just see a small staircase.
It was a nice and entertaining weekend as a craftsman and basket maker. And for the fifth time, it was great fun to show and explain the craft of basket making to the visitors. The guild and crafts market 2024 is definitely already marked in my calendar.
