On the weekend of July 15th and 16th, 2017 it was medieval for the tenth time in the Georgenwald in Himbach. There were again numerous campers, traders and craftsmen on the site. Separated by small groups of trees, everything seems a little homely and something new awaits the visitor behind every corner.
My basket making business was also there again this year and offered wicker cane weaving as a hands-on activity. Like the year before, I was able to pitch my tents again in the spot I wanted. And we did that in peace and quiet on Friday evening.
On market Saturday at 10 a.m. the hustle and bustle of the market started, with music, jugglers, warehouse people and lots of dressed people. It would be a long market day until 11 p.m. And with wise foresight, we decided to spend the night on site beforehand. An advantage if you call your vehicle a T4 Multivan and can park it not far from the market area. But it was still a long time away. In between, a few children came along who wanted to weave their bowls out of wicker. In addition to my participation, I only noticed felt and clay for children at the market.
As dusk fell, the flow of visitors ebbed noticeably. All visitors were on the large market lawn and in anticipation of the fire show we were able to enjoy the peace and quiet a little further up and start the evening with delicious mead creations. Everything was illuminated by our concealed LED lighting in the sales tent and a great remaining candle waxless wick ceramic bowl from our “Ceramic Sabine”. One of the four Wetterau originals that took part in this market.
After an unusual, since rarely practiced, overnight stay on the bus, it was time to wash the cat and brush our teeth on Sunday. The first thing Ralf had to do was find a cup of coffee. And luckily the baker, who was already diligently preparing his dough for the flowerpot bread, had brewed some delicious coffee. And two cups of this refreshing drink were ours and awakened the last spirits that were still sleeping.
The gates to the market area were opened at 10 a.m. And today my weaving tent was suddenly full of children who really wanted to weave a basket. Sometimes the parents had to help, but sometimes the children completed it on their own. So the time flew by.
The shopping baskets I made especially for this market were slow-moving items. That surprised me a bit considering the markets before where they were all sold. But you can see again how different the markets can be. But I’m not angry about it, because that means to me that I don’t have to rush into weaving shopping baskets again.
A great market weekend in the Georgenwald is now over again. Thanks to the Freyvolk zu Hohenstaufen for the excellent organization, the good mood and the dry weather on Saturday and Sunday. I would be happy to be part of the action again in 2018 for the 11th market.
