Over the last 12 months, there have been a few surprises that were not planned. And yet we have once again managed to go our own way together when it comes to basket making.
January 2024
As always, all the market dates for the coming year are already firmly planned in January and have already been published in my diary. The anticipation of the upcoming market season is slowly building up and some of the braiding work I wanted to do over the winter has fallen by the wayside again. The winter break is just too short.
February 2024
In February, the number 13 proved that it is not an unlucky number. The Kreative Finger basket-making workshop was launched 13 years ago. Nevertheless, there was no party, but rather work to ensure that I could really present enough basketry with the first market.
March 2024
In the certainty that we will at least get cold feet, the market season starts in 2024 with the first farmers’ market in Bad Salzhausen. However, spring fever really kicked in with almost 15 degrees and sunshine. It was also a premiere for our neighbouring stand, who we had persuaded months ago to apply for the market. With Grobauer Leder, there is now a product enrichment at the farmers’ market.
April 2024
After 40 years, I stumble across a classmate by chance, who learnt basket making with me from 1980 to 1983, because she offers me a few tools for sale by email. We spent two hours on the phone talking about old and young times.
May 2024
Every two years we are drawn to Seligenstadt. After a forced break in previous years, the Klatschmohn association once again organises the guild and crafts market in Seligenstadt Monastery. And to make the most of the weekend, we set up our caravan on a campsite nearby. We enjoyed this short trip with cosy hours after work from setting up to dismantling in the monastery.
June 2024
We cancelled the farmers’ market in June at short notice due to reported thunderstorms. It’s just too dangerous outdoors and under trees. I also seem to have lost my voice in Seligenstadt. I can hardly get a decent sound out of it other than a grating iron or a crow. Ralf also seems to have a bit of a bronchial infection.
July 2024
No more bronchial tubes for Ralf. He went straight to hospital at the beginning of July. With all the trimmings. We went straight from the cardiologist in Büdingen to Bad Nauheim by emergency doctor and ambulance – heart attack was the diagnosis. Surgery, intensive care and normal ward followed by rehab gave us both a forced break until September. Everything is now well again and there was also something positive: Ralf stopped smoking.
September 2024
Company holidays, relaxation, rest – that was on the agenda from mid-September to mid-October. As always in Corsica. Where else too.
October 2024
With a holiday that felt far too short, the market season for this year came to a close at the end of October with the last farmers’ market. This means stowing away goods, tents and accessories until 2025, reweaving a few things and working through any orders that have not yet been completed. You also have to think about what you want to weave during the winter break.
November 2024
Chair braids – Somehow they always seem to be left over at the end of the year. But when it’s time to weave them with cotton braiding tape, the mood lifts. Unlike with natural material, nothing constantly breaks, cracks or tears here. Despite all the claims about how good natural chair cane is now, it is a far cry from the quality it used to be. And it is now too expensive to burn. So the only good alternative is cotton wicker.
December 2024
As always, the last month of the year is filled with final planning for the coming year. One last time to check whether the market dates can be reconciled with the rest of the year’s planning.
In December, the calculation of costs is always put to the test. As a result, after two years, I have to adjust the prices for wickerwork moderately.
