The announcement for yesterday’s farmers market, June 4th, 2023, actually read and sounded good. The 25th anniversary of the farmers market should be celebrated. In hindsight, the execution didn’t correspond to what was announced for my (Ralf) taste. And I wasn’t alone with this opinion either.
The children’s festival, music, inauguration of the water treading system, speeches, etc. were planned parallel to the farmers’ market.
In my opinion, 25 years is a reason to celebrate, be happy and look forward to hopefully another quarter of a century. Apart from the children, who clearly had fun with face painting, the bouncy castle, the carousel and making soap bubbles, I had the feeling that I was attending a funeral service rather than a happy event. Apart from the official speeches that are to be expected on such an occasion.
Musically it wasn’t really convincing, or rather, not convincing at all. And certainly not in terms of sound. Contrary to usual, during market time you could only occasionally hear some of the music. And that was ultimately a good thing.
From “Kumbaja my Lord” to classical music with a small string orchestra, there was nothing to be heard that would almost make you want to dance. And that’s what one could actually have expected for such an occasion. In the morning you could have sat around the campfire armed with a “bag” and in the afternoon with classical music, I was already thinking of a state funeral. I’m not a classical music fan, but I know that there are definitely some more uptempo pieces in this genre of music. In conversations with other market suppliers, I learned that there were already visitors who almost fled with the comment “you can’t listen to that”. Ultimately, I was happy that the technology ensured that not everything that was offered musically could be heard at the stand.
As far as the farmers market was concerned, it was pretty much business as usual. There was interest, we had a lot of conversations, answered questions and were happy about a blue sky, the sunshine but also the shade that the trees gave us. And also that many a basket has changed hands.
