The timing finally worked for me. Canceled for the last two years due to Corona, this year the time had finally come. Bouxurulles and the 10th braiders’ meeting around the pasture are fixed in the calendar.
From the Camping Club Lac de Bouzey campsite in Sanchey it is only around 30km to Bouxurulles. There is a place closer, but it is closed this year due to a change of ownership.
Bouxurulles is a small village in the middle of the Vosges with around 180 inhabitants. On the first two days (May 26th and 27th) only braiding courses were offered, which were quickly booked up when first announced. The basket makers and weaving artists traveled from Denmark to Spain and a colleague was even there from Japan.
Curious, we wandered around the town on the first day of our visit and looked for individual braiding courses and found them with the help of very friendly residents. The first point of contact was Valérie Testu and her workshop. From there a detour to another course where square baskets were woven. What we were missing was seating at the weaving classes for curious visitors like us. Then we would definitely have watched for a longer time.
There was a small basket exhibition in the church opposite the town hall on Friday, which we didn’t miss. From ancient to modern, weaving products were exhibited.
For Saturday, the basket market was quickly brought forward by 3 hours because a television team had registered. Thanks to good sources of information, we also noticed this in Sanchey, 30km away, and were able to plan our visit accordingly.
The stands were already set up and the basketry was on offer. We wandered around with our eyes wide open, but didn’t actually discover anything really new or exciting. The prices quoted were typically French. A good 50 percent higher than usual in Germany. In my experience, no one at home would want to pay that much for a (shopping) basket. Although craftsmanship and artistry should have their price in this country too.
So the trip came to an end for us and on Sunday we headed back home.
