Today it was that time again. A braiding course was scheduled. Pastures, tools, lunch and drinks were driven to the NABU house in Ortenberg-Selters and everything was prepared for the course.
The temperature was reasonably pleasant and we set up outside under the large plane tree. The course participants had barely finished and after introductions from both sides, we started.
All steps for the floor cross were explained and how the floor is braided. The rigging, the hull chine, the layer; All new terms and activities that a basket maker knows were eagerly taken up and implemented.
In between, walkers and cyclists passing by showed their interest in what was being shown, many questions were answered and many people remembered the past, when baskets were still commonplace. There was lively discussion about reminders, picking baskets, etc.
Happy to have a break for lunch, we continued afterwards. Many a hand and finger ached, my shoulders and back ached because of the unfamiliar work.
But the basket had to be finished, so we bravely continued weaving. The final rear sight and surcharge were then called for. And suddenly the wicker basket was ready. Here and there, of course, a little help was given and weaving mistakes were corrected. But in the end, each course participant had their own, self-woven basket in their hands.
