Today I held a mixed braiding course for the first time. Children and adults could weave a basket with willow.
I prepared floors for the children the day before. The adults, on the other hand, were allowed to occupy themselves with the floor cross.
What is striking is how quickly the children internalize the individual work steps such as rear sight, layer and final rear sight. After a short instruction, they got started as if they had never done anything else before.
Meanwhile, the adults started their floor cross and the bottom of the basket. What was unusual for me was the change in thinking for a left-handed person. Explaining all the steps “the wrong way round” required a lot of thought. But it ultimately worked. What is incomprehensible to me, however, according to one course participant, is that some courses are canceled for her when people find out that she is left-handed. Adjusting to unfamiliar situations should be absolutely normal for a course instructor.
However. After just under three hours, the children had processed all the willows while the adults put in the stands and started the double rear sight.
The young basket makers were then able to present their results at 1:00 p.m. and everyone said goodbye with the certainty that these wicker baskets will be in use for a long time.
After lunch it was time for the adults to continue with the layers and the final rear sight. The sound of the iron being used could be heard throughout the house and around 5:00 p.m. they were also the owners of a wicker basket they had woven themselves.
Everyone involved said they had fun and I hope they have a lot of fun with their baskets.
