The basket market took place in Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia from September 21st to 22nd, 2014. Reason enough to visit the city where I learned my basket-making craft for three years.
On Friday we went leisurely with a caravan in tow to the campsite in Lichtenfels. Once we got there, we settled in comfortably and stocked up on the essentials of food.
On Saturday we first bought materials. If you’re already there, then that’s a good idea. Willows were quickly selected and stowed in the bus and off to the basket market, the actual reason for the visit.
First we ran into Patrick and Séverin from L’osier de Gué-Droit. Here you can buy the best willows and of course a bunch was mine.
After a chat, we set off and tried to get a first impression. There are international basket makers around the parish church, which for me is the most beautiful part of the entire basket market. But there are also a few interesting stands scattered around the town hall that we took a look at. It’s simply overwhelming the inspiration that comes at you. Also because as a spectator you could watch one or two braiding courses and learn a few tricks.
Initially sunny, the weather then took a turn for the worse in the late afternoon. There were frequent torrential rains, which we had already experienced at the campsite at the time. Within a very short time, masses of water fell from the sky and we were happy to be able to sit dry.
And on Sunday it rained off and on throughout the day. Nevertheless, we took another walk around the market and then went to the basket museum in Michelau. This meant that we could continue to focus on the topic of baskets for the rest of Sunday.
