As a birthday surprise, I went out this week. Loaded with colorful wicker cane, floors and tools, we headed to Ortenberg. Ten children had gathered and wanted to weave together.
The birthday child herself actively supported me, because as a two-time participant in the Ortenberg Holiday Games, she knows her stuff well. Only two birthday guests used a prepared floor with a standee. Everyone else wanted to weave their basket from scratch. And as always, the hardest question of all was which colors to braid with. The choice is sometimes not easy.
But in the end everyone found their color(s) and they braided it diligently. Instead of a basket, however, many specimens developed into a full-grown basket. The braid went higher and higher. Only limited by the display, at some point I had to stop braiding and I had to braid some of the baskets. Simply for the reason of bringing a little stability into the whole thing.
In the end everyone has woven their own colorful basket and it will be interesting to see which of them might turn up under the Christmas tree as a Christmas present for a loved one.
