After two years it was that time again. As a visitor, I wanted to take a look around the basket market in Lichtenfels and buy a few materials at the same time. Well, the little bit becomes quite expensive.
The weekend started on Friday with the arrival and setting up at the campsite. And to get an overview of who and what was there, we quickly went into town. As usual, the best and most interesting things around the church can be discovered. Many basket makers from all over Europe arrived. Including some new exhibitors.
Contrary to my usual shyness, two people that I know from Facebook came towards us at the church and I ran up to them with my hand outstretched and said: “Hi Bill, I’m Katja Schyrer”. At first a bit surprised, the aha effect came and Bill introduced his companion Heidi.
Bill traveled from America with a group of 11 people. He specializes in fine weaving and Heidi is his student. A short small talk, then we said goodbye for the day.
So that promised to be an interesting basket market weekend. Especially since the weather forecast was getting better and better every hour. And the first day ended with a magnificent sunset on the Main.
Saturday and Sunday were characterized by sunshine, lots of impressions and another friend, Rita, who was able to find one of the crowds. We strategically sat down at the fountain and watched who came by. I don’t know how I always pick out the people I know from the many visitors. It just works.
We continued through the market past the basket dealers’ stands. Standard and mass-produced goods in light brown wherever you looked. That’s really not my thing. So a walk around the town hall, where the school for wickerwork design, the state guild and other basket makers, now called wickerwork designers, offered their products. At least here you didn’t have the feeling of being overwhelmed by mass-produced goods. Then back up to the church, eating something in between. So we spent countless hours looking into everyone’s tents.
We also watched a few braiding courses. Once to keep an eye on a colleague I know. But also to listen carefully to how the course instructors explain certain work steps. Interesting for someone like me, who gives braiding courses myself.
So the time flew by and with it two days of basket market. What was striking was that actually all exhibitors, with very few exceptions, mainly showed rattle technology and Burkina Faso.
