Things got hot at the 11th Hohenstaufen Medieval Festival in Limeshain-Himbach on July 14th and 15th, 2018. The day before, we set out on the journey to Georgenwald to set up everything we needed.
This time the stand was in the usual location at the entrance. After a short search, we found the sign with my company name. A short consultation with the organization was necessary so that we knew how much space on the left and right was needed by fellow dealers.
And then everything was set up calmly. The outside temperature at 11 a.m. was estimated at 26 degrees, but felt like it was around 40 degrees. And the human cooling apparatus made sure to get everything under control. Soaking wet, gasping for oxygen, and with plenty of water, we finished the construction. So everything was ready for the market weekend.
1st market day
What could be nicer than being reminded by the alarm clock at 6:15 a.m. on a Saturday morning to prepare for Himbach? After a shower, breakfast and after all the cats were taken care of, we set off on the short journey. The market stall was comfortably prepared for the next 14 hours. And with every minute it got warmer and warmer. Despite the shade from the trees all around, it was shaping up to be a hot day. The assumption was that the number of visitors was based on the expected temperatures. And so it was. A clear stream of visitors passed the stand, having a short conversation here and there and always looking for a cool and shady spot.
I then spent the first few hours starting a chair weave and going here and there to colleagues. At a later hour the activities became more sparing, because from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. the sun was exactly in the place where no tree provided shade. Luckily that changed around 7 p.m. when it finally got a little cooler again. The longing for moderate temperatures grew and people looked forward to an evening with friends with mead, wine, sausage, chatter. Very early on Sunday, around 1 a.m. we went to bed… yes, we spent the night in Himbach.
2nd market day
The short night ended at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, a little restless and unusual because it wasn’t regular. Sunlight and the urge to pursue our human needs drove us relentlessly out of the VW bus. Somehow you managed to make your way to the cat wash, get ready for the market and even find your way directly to the stand. Not because you had alcohol-related after-pains, but rather because of the heat from the previous day and restless sleep. And of course the knowledge that it will be warmer again on Sunday.
Breakfast in the tent with steaks, tomatoes, cucumbers, banana. Only the coffee is missing. And then Anna from the Troll and Fairytale Forge agreed to provide us with the hello-wake-without-coffee-in-the-morning-nothing works. Wow, and it was also strongly brewed. So they passed the time until the market opened and then hoped that there wouldn’t be even fewer visitors.
And everything always turns out differently than you fear or suspect. Subjectively there were no more visitors. But clearly more ready to buy than the day before. And even the younger market visitors were at least interested in weaving with wicker. But that was sweaty again: getting up, choosing a colorful wicker cane, sitting down and doing it all over again. After that it was time for a break, shade, drink, drink, drink. Chair braid continue, break, drink, drink, etc.
And then it was time. End of market = dismantling time. Slowly but steadily everything was packed, dismantled and loaded. Don’t forget to drink. Somehow you had the feeling that the mineral water had taken the direct route out via the sweat glands. You still made it and made your way home soaked in your own juice. In a nutshell: arrival, terrace, shade, wind, cool, cheers, good night.
Conclusion
Beautifully located at the Georgenwald in Himbach, the market is simply part of my annual planning. It’s always a family atmosphere and everyone always stays relaxed (99.9% at least).
It’s just fun to be able to be here and I’m looking forward to hopefully being able to be there again in 364 days.
