As soon as you arrive, your holiday is already over. The holiday is far too short, the days fly by. If you’ve only just unpacked your suitcase, it feels like you’re packing again a short time later. Everyday life calls but you just want to get away. And like almost everyone else, our holiday felt far too short.
And yet, after the turbulent time before, we visited our favourite island in the Mediterranean for three weeks and felt like we were back home after a long time.
And as soon as you get back to Germany, everyday life takes hold of you and won’t let go. Calls from (impatient) customers who always want everything done immediately and yesterday, preparations for the last market of the year and the hope of a dry end to the season.
And Ralf is also back in the rut of working from home, organising appointments for his cardiac surgery and dealing with new (EU) laws that will make life difficult for a (small) business owner. The normal madness has you back in its grip and everything is the same as before.
But we’re already looking forward to and planning our 2025 holiday.
And until then, we are enjoying memories and very, very old friends that we have visited again after a long time.
1000 year old pistachio tree
Translation: This mastic pistachio tree, ‘U Listincu’ in Corsica, is about 1000 years old.
With a length of almost 7 metres, a circumference of 1.90 m and a crown area of almost 80 m², it is impressive. Above its roots, we can see a buried construction that could be an ancient Roman oven.
We can say that it is one of the oldest trees in Corsica.
Since the 2000s, the association A.R.B.R.E.S. has started as part of the action ‘<200 trees find our roots’. awards it the label ‘Remarkable Tree’. This label is awarded to exceptional trees based on their age, size, shape, past and even their legends. It subsequently won the nationwide ‘Tree of the Year 2011’ competition.
This tree was discovered by Elise Inversin in 1991. During her time as a shepherdess, she decided to clear the site where it was located to limit the risk of fire and protect her sheep. She thus succeeded in revealing this magnificent tree, which had been hidden for several hundred years.
One day, when a fire was dangerously approaching her house, which was very close to the tree, she explained to the firefighters: ‘A house can be rebuilt, take care of the tree instead.
Over 200 year old cork oak
Description: This cork oak, called Arburacellu, is around 200 to 230 years old and measures 20 to 25 metres high with a circumference estimated by the National Forestry Office at 5 metres.
Its cork protrusions, most probably caused by a fire or a lightning strike, make it something very special. Especially because of the perfect symmetry of the ‘bird wings’, which we can guess. A wonder of nature whose trunk is reminiscent of a bird of prey in flight. In April 2019, our tree was awarded the ‘Remarkable Tree’ label by the association.
A.R.B.R.E.S. for trees that are exceptional in terms of their age, dimensions, shapes, past and even their legends. It also won the public award in the national ‘Tree of the Year 2018’ competition and came 4th in the European ‘Tree of the Year’ competition. These trees represent a natural and cultural heritage that must be preserved.
This tree was discovered in 2018 by Yves Goletto and his granddaughter and then presented in various competitions with the help of Elise Inversin.
