The weather gods must be from Seligenstadt, or at least members of the Klatschmohn e.V. association.
It simply cannot be any other way, considering the weather forecasts that were circulating and what the weather actually turned out to be. Instead of thunderstorms and rain, it stayed dry on both market days, at least during opening hours.
We combined the market with a short camping weekend in Mainflingen once again.
Set-up on 29 May 2026
We set up at the museum in no time on Friday. A missing table was delivered later. Putting up the decorations and arranging the baskets was also done in a flash. The caretaker even brought us a lamp. The lighting was really necessary, as it was too dark to see the fine basketwork I wanted to display. Then we headed straight back to the campsite, with a quick detour to do some shopping.
The usual car park nearby has a 2.5-tonne weight limit, and our bus has a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes. We were told of an alternative parking spot (1 km away) and went to have a look at it. But in the end, Ralf discovered that the 2.5-tonne limit doesn’t refer to the gross vehicle weight but to the actual weight at that moment. In our case, that comes to 2.4 tonnes, so we were allowed to park on the deck after all. We were lucky.
1st market day
Just to secure a parking space big enough for our large bus, we’ve always set off very early to drive the 4 km from Mainflingen to Seligenstadt. That way, the market day gets off to a very relaxed start at the museum. I then made some bracelets using willow strips and rings that I’d prepared at home.
Lots of visitors found their way to the museum, a few baskets even changed hands, and before we knew it, the day was over.
2nd market day
On the second day of the market, we were off to the monastery early once again. Around 9 o’clock, the sky looked quite dark at first, and shortly afterwards the rain started pouring down. But it only lasted a short while, and then the wet fun was over. This day, too, flew by. No sooner had we settled in comfortably, satisfied our hunger with food from ‘Grandma’s Kitchen’, chatted with visitors and exchanged baskets for euros, than it was already time to pack up for the day.
Ralf then went to fetch the bus from the car park. However, access to the old town is secured by bollards. So how were we to get through to dismantle the stand? Ralf then found out the access code and was able to use it to make the bollards disappear into the ground. It was just a shame that the next exhibitor’s vehicle was then parked in front of the bollards again. Whether that was intentional or a permanent solution was eventually found is not known. Anyway, we were able to pack up and head off
It took us about 30 minutes in total, and we were then on our way back to the campsite. We transferred the baskets to the trailer we’d brought with us and then enjoyed a relaxing evening.
On Monday, all the camping gear was loaded into the bus and we drove home at a leisurely pace.
