Peter let the sun shine brightly when we entered the monastery grounds on Sunday, a good hour before the market started. The first route led to the stand in the museum. On the way there there was a cheerful “good morning” sound from everywhere. Everyone who took part was in a good mood and, as far as I could tell, also highly motivated. If the market was already a hit on Saturday with the best weather, today it should be even better.
The stand was quickly prepared and then the remaining time until the market opened was used to take a look around. A quick bread with delicious hand cheese for on the go. The time flew by with nice conversations and then it was time to go to the museum and occupy the stand.
Even before midday there was hardly anyone getting through the market area and there were also large crowds of people in front of my stand every now and then. Lots of nice conversations were had, there was a lot of technical talk and the variety that the basket-making craft has to offer.
While I was diligently demonstrating the rattle technique, I kept hearing that people were amazed at how flexible the wood is. Such comments then gave rise to a conversation about pollarded willows and cultivated willows. And many a visitor then realized why their basket made of pollard willow had become sloppy.
So the day went by quickly and at 6 p.m. it was time for everyone active to call it a day.
We packed, hauled, cleaned up and loaded the car. People usually said goodbye with the words “until 2018” and I would be happy to be there again. Then we had to move carefully with the car through the crowds that were still there. Not quite at the exit it started to rain. It’s a shame for those who showed off their craft outside in their tents. I hope everyone was able to dismantle relatively dry.
