For three years now, together with the city of Ortenberg, I have been offering two braiding courses for children and young people during the summer holidays. And so the first course of this summer vacation took place yesterday. However, due to the unstable weather, we braided in the NABU house. Twelve children gathered before the start at 9:00 a.m. and wanted to weave a small basket with colorful wicker. Some have already taken part several times and as professionals now, I didn’t have to worry too much about this group. How naturally they supported themselves.
So I was able to take more care of the youngest braiders and show them how to attach the stands and then later intertwine the cane. The agony of choice when it comes to the available colors is always predictable. Your eyes kept wandering back and forth between your own basket and the wicker until you finally decided on the next color. For me it was quite an exercise routine, constantly running back and forth between the work tables and the bundles of braiding material and pulling out the long braiding threads.
Little by little, a real competition developed as to who had gone the furthest and how high they had already reached. It seemed to me that everyone was having a lot of fun. There was a lot of laughing, talking and talking and the three hours went by far too quickly for some. So each of the course participants braided diligently until the end and I also lent a hand to some of the completions and awards so that the adults who came to pick them up didn’t have to wait too long.
